Kyle Welland inherits a box of letters that had been composed by his great-great-grandparents, Christopher Newman and Anna Armstrong. Ghosts of his Victorian lineage, they become commentators on his failing marriage, infidelities, and strained relationship with his only son. As his world implodes, they cajole, tease, criticize, and compare from their starched perspectives as upstanding ‘rebels’ in their own times.

Centering on the gold rush town of Barkerville, British Columbia, the novel picks up the frayed threads of our colonial mindset and attempts to weave a future that might work for its characters in the 21st century. It’s ‘serious humour.’ You never know if the punchlines are going to make you laugh, or frown, or cry, or all three at the same time.
